Children & Community Centre

The flagship purpose-built Community & Children’s Centre on Sysonby Street was officially opened on 27th October 2008 by Young Mayor of Melton Tom North and Leicester City legends Steve Walsh and Muzzy Izzet. The grand opening was a great success with activities for children and families and an opportunity for residents to see the centre and speak to a number of agencies and services which will be on offer. The centre was named the COVE by local resident Katie Thompson, which stands for a
‘Centre Of Vision and Enthusiasm’.
The name was put forward through a local naming competition through which lots of great names and thoughts behind the centre were put forward by local residents. A big thank you to all who entered the competition.
The centre has been an aspiration for the Egerton community for many years and thanks to the work done by Cllr. Brenda Smith, Ronan Browne of Melton Borough Council, Muir Housing, Leicestershire County Council and the fantastic support and drive from the RAGE residents group and local community we can finally look forward to celebrating this great resource in the heart of the community.
The centre consists of two main halls for large group activities, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor, with disabled & child friendly access to both floors via lift. The centre also incorporates an early years education area with enclosed outside play space and separate kitchen, a multi-purpose family room, consultation rooms and a reception. A larger community kitchen is accessible on the ground floor.
The centre hopes to be able to offer a wide range of activities for the local community including IT and internet training, arts & crafts, sports, social events and a youth club to name a few. Activities will be tailored for all sections of the community, from the under-5s to pensioners, with an aspiration that as far as possible the activities and services will be free for local residents.
